"A warrior who cannot foresee three moves ahead upon the board will surely lose his head amid the shield-wall." Osric, Keeper of the Hearth & Forge
Long before steel clashes at dawn, campaigns are won by foresight. Known traditionally as Hnefatafl or the King?s Table, this ancient Norse game pits a besieged sovereign and his retinue against an encircling host of attackers. It remains a stark, tactical contest that has challenged Norsemen, traders, and raiders across centuries.
This particular gaming set is built strictly for the rigours of encampment life. The board is wrought from supple, genuine leather measuring approximately 32 by 31.5 centimetres, adorned with hand-engraved Viking knotwork that deepens with honest field use. The playing pieces consist of weighted, polished glass stones measuring 1.9 centimetres across: black pebbles for the assailants, white for the garrison sworn to the king's defence, and a striking green stone marking the monarch himself.
Utility on campaign demands clever gear. Threaded with a generous 125-centimetre cord, the leather board swiftly cinches into its own travel pouch, holding the glass pieces securely whether strapped to a saddle or stowed in your kitbag.
To maintain your kit, shield the leather from prolonged damp. Should weather overtake your camp, gently pat the hide dry and allow it to season naturally away from hearth fires; clean the glass stones with cool water and mild soap. For permanent storage, keep the leather rolled or flat rather than folded to preserve the engraved hide. As each board is handmade, expect subtle variations in hide tone and stone colouring.
