"A proper arena helm must turn the cut, catch the crowd's eye, and give a warrior clear sight and air when the dust rises." Osric, Keeper of the Hearth & Forge
Rooted in the brutal amphitheatres of Ancient Rome, this helm follows the classic Thraex pattern. It mirrors archaeological specimens unearthed at Pompeii and evokes the armour borne by the captured Thracian soldier Spartacus prior to his rebellion in 73 BC. The high crest was historically aligned with the griffin of Nemesis, commanding respect within the arena.
Handcrafted from robust 18 gauge mild steel, the shell is treated with an antique polish to capture the weathered countenance of seasoned arena armour. Its sweeping wide brim is engineered to cast deflected strikes clear of the neck and shoulders. The enclosed face guard provides formidable coverage whilst integrated perforations maintain essential sightlines and ventilation. Surmounting the crest is an authentic plume of natural black horsehair, lending an imposing silhouette whether mounted for display or carried into theatre and LARP campaigns.
For fit and wear, the interior features an integrated leather liner that cushions the skull and distributes weight evenly. A supple leather chin strap with an adjustable buckle holds the assembly steady during vigorous movement. Because each piece is worked individually, minor natural variations in steel texture, finish, and plume will occur. Upon arrival, wipe away the protective transit oil with a soft dry cloth. Store the helm away from moisture, oil the mild steel periodically, and lightly brush the horsehair plume to preserve its fighting trim.
