"Hold the line, lock your timber, and let the centre boss break their press." Osric, Keeper of the Hearth & Forge
The scutum stood as the impenetrable bulwark of the Roman infantry from the early Republic through the Imperial era, renowned for interlocking in the famed testudo to deflect barrages of missile fire. This recreation honours that classical heritage with a curved, semi-cylindrical body shaped from durable ten-millimetre plywood, adorned with authentic painted legionary colours and patterns.
Bolted firmly over the central hand opening is a robust umbo pressed from eighteen-gauge mild steel. In ancient field tactics, this heavy boss deflected thrusts and delivered crushing punches in close-order scuffles. On the reverse, a sturdy wooden handle provides a dependable, balanced hold, allowing for straightforward manoeuvring during theatrical drills or living history presentations.
Be mindful of its intended post: this shield is crafted specifically for cosplay, stage performances, LARP, and proud hall display. It is not engineered to withstand blows from actual steel combat or blunt martial sparring.
To maintain your kit between gatherings, guard the woodwork against excessive moisture to avoid unsightly warping of the core. Clean both the painted timber and the steel umbo with a dry or lightly dampened cloth, ensuring the metal stays dry to prevent rust. Store the piece resting flat or securely hung within a cool, dry armoury.
