"A warrior shivering in the northern gales is half-beaten before the shield wall even clashes. Keep your wits sharp and your neck warm with honest cloth." Osric, Keeper of the Hearth & Forge
Unearthed from an eleventh-century grave in northern Norway, the Skjoldehamn pattern remains one of the most practical cold-weather designs ever recovered. This reproduction honours that functional Norse heritage with rugged materials suited for harsh conditions. The outer shell is fashioned from stout 420gsm recycled wool, naturally shedding chill and mist, whilst the inner face is lined with smooth 220gsm linen. This proper layering prevents coarse wool from abrading the skin and allows breathability during strenuous marches.
The tailoring features a tall, pointed hood engineered to cover the crown and ears entirely against cutting squalls. Below, the square shoulder cape drapes broadly over the torso, terminating in distinct points at the front and back to cast off weather while preserving unhindered arm movement. It layers comfortably over a woolen tunic or beneath heavy armour on the march.
Each hood is individually handcrafted, meaning subtle variations in dye tone and stitching will occur. To maintain this kit through seasons of campaigning, dry cleaning is recommended. Should you hand wash it in camp, immerse gently in cold water with mild wool soap, reshape the damp fabric, and dry flat away from direct heat. Store it cool and clear of moths until the next muster.
